Smoult's Continental Deli

Smoult's Continental Deli on Whatley crescent is a cave of gourmet goodness. From fresh continental meats, cheeses, and hard to find dry ingredients.

To boot they have a sausage sizzle on Saturday mornings and makes picnic baskets for those romantic outings or just days when you forgot to make a picnic basket and you have a picnic to go to! Just give them an hour ahead for their basic picnic package.

Not only that, the ladies that run this place are fabulous. Passion and personality in equal amounts.

A great local business that I'd recommend to anyone and everyone.

Retrotastic @ Maylands Whatley Crescent

When I walked down the shops on Whatley Crescent, opposite the Maylands train station, on the same strip as that of my favourite cake shop, Sherbet, I discovered a retro gem - the Retrotastic store.

It stocks all things vintage, all things retro. From framed posters, old suit cases, sunglasses, to household items like chairs, lamps, couches, coffee tables and other bic and bracs.

It's such an adorable store and filled with so many things that I wouldn't mind decking out my own place. In particular a few of their lamps and chairs!

Go check it out if you are in the area. Who knows, you might go home with a rare gem. That perfect decor item you've been looking for, or that gift for the girl or boy who wants a little something different for their home.

Chapels on Whatley

Maylands - well to be precise a small strip that's on the corner of Eighth avenue and Whatley crescent is one of my favourite places for decent cake, pastry, coffee and teas. As well as for chance to wonder around the very few boutiques that's around there, OH and shop at its very cool butcher/specialised continental shop. After all it is home to my favourite bakery/patisserie - Sherbet.

Along that strip, there's a cafe that is decked out in a very Asian theme called Chapels on Whatley.

It's decor is something out of a Chinese movie and you be forgiven if you thought you were at some Zen or Yue garden when you step outside to their courtyard. After all there are replicas of life sized Terracotta warriors and a "lillypond" (I use that term very loosely...) with a floating Buddha head and goldfish (?replacement Koi) with lots of red Chinese umbrellas to shade you. It's a rather lovely, quaint and pleasant. Oh and how lovely that they had the water sprinklers on to cool us down from above! Just perfect on a hot day!

The ambience is chilled and relaxed although I wish they didn't use such high pitched Asian music in the background. Maybe I should introduce them to Jay Chou and the Asian pop scene (with more the love songs to play in the background - at least the love songs aren't so irritating on the ears).

Anyway, I wasn't there for very long... More an afternoon catchup with a gf I haven't seen in a couple of months due to our conflicting schedule of holiday making.

But I'll let you know that they have an extensive meal menu, catering towards breakfast/lunch/brunch (even at 3pm!). They also have a nice and sweet dessert menu and a lovely range of coffees, frappas, iced teas and of course hot teas. So really you can make it a day chilling out in their courtyard garden! or book out their private function area upstairs (I think it'd be perfect of Hen's parties/kitchen teas/baby showers/birthdays).

But for us - afternoon tea it is. Being hot (poor and I'm feeling a bit fat as I've had a bad week at the gym) we settled for one alligator strawberry frappe for MM and one Lychee iced tea for me. We also had a plate of cream, jam and scones to share - one plain and one fruit. But they do a proper two hours high tea! Just give them a call to book!

The frappe was beautiful with freshly blended strawberries topped with ice cream and cream (I had a sip). The lychee iced tea - was a little watered down and could've been more flavoursome, was nonetheless fruity (thanks to the additional two lychee (probably canned) fruit at the bottom and total refreshing on a hot sunny afternoon.

The scones on the other hand were a bit of a let down. Skimping out on the cream and jam. Scones themselves were a little on the stale side (although was warm). We should've had the macaroons they looked great! Nevermind, next time.

I also recommend, if you are a tea lover just get your hot tea because at $5 it's a bottomless cup, meaning buy just one cup and you can sit there and get refills for the same tea or any of the other teas on their menu!

Overall, Chapels on Whatley is such a lovely place to catch up chill and have a nice long chat! And afterwards you can wander around the area and have a look at the boutiques and heh why not check out the things Chapels themselves sell at the back?

Sherbet

OH SHERBERT! A local favourite in the heart of a changing face of Maylands. Opposite the Maylands train station there is a row of stores, cafes and shops. From a deli (which was sizzling away sausages on this particular sunny yet chilly winter Saturday) to a oriental-themed cafe, Chapels, a bar (shut on a Saturday morning) called Sparrow, the corner Mrs. S brunch cafe (which I can never seem to get a table at!) and then there is Sherbet the wonderous cake and pastry store. A little Paris in a suburb that could be so much more than what it is at present. Give it time perhaps.

Decked in mint green, pinks, baby blues with photos of Paris, the little cakery is packed on the weekends. Luckily bf and I were able to get a table outside in the sunshine. With an arry of cakes on display, all housemade may I add, it makes it a tough choice.

However, I was keen to get their 3-layer fabulous Red Velvet Cake. Their signature. It was a monster of a piece and bf and I should have known better and should have shared, alas, we didn't. It came with a side of homemade vanilla bean cream (you can see the vanilla black dots through it! - that always makes me excited!!).

It was rich, it was indulgent, it was well deserved on this Saturday early afternoon, having faced a horrible week at work.

Bf, had the lemon slice. It was zesty and sweet. But the one coffee cart at work sells lemon slice and his one seems better. I think the Lemon slice at Sherbet is missing something. It seemed a little stale? Not enough balance of the two zesty and sweetness I think. It also came with a side of cream.

Then we had a take-away red velvet for my parents. Carefully wrapped in brown paper bag with their stamp logo, it was the perfect present!

OH just to let you know, they also make pastries and warm food. But I recommend that you come here for coffee and a slice of any of their range of cakes. Afternoon tea anyone?

Milkd Maylands ...

I was in Maylands the other weekend, well, I should say I passed through but luckily for me I had an excuse to stop by and try one of their many new cafes that have popped up. One in particular I wanted to try was Mrs. S. It's a tiny little cafe with quirky misfits interior designing, with cute storybook menus and of course the thing that is taking over little corner deli to open cafes.

Unfortunately, Mrs. S was full and had a 10minute wait and although the food served looked soooooo damn good, bf and I were starving, (it was 2pm and both of us haven't had breakfast, let alone have lunch, and after spending the morning getting new phones and debating about getting bf a Tag watch we were rather desperate for food before we spent any more money on anything else) so the 10 minute wait was too much. So the failings of Mrs. S to get us a seat meant we headed to Milkd, which was just down the street, 2 minutes walk.

Milkd was essentially empty. This was once a bustling cafe and with competition completely and utterly empty. Talk about squeezing the competition out!

Anyway, I ended up with latte, which was made very nicely, and ordered myself a healthy toasted museli with yogurt and fruits, along with a side of scrambled eggs, as I had a major craving for eggs, (originally wanted poached, but according to staff they don't make poached eggs anymore - which really does not make sense to me!). Bf ordered a bottle of coke (it comes in the glass bottles of course!) and the big breakfast with toasted bread, chirozo, mushrooms, eggs, bacon, fetta cheese and rocket.

I have to say the toasted muesli with a side of milk was just delicious! I am so glad the milk wasn't in there because the museli by itself with the yogurt drizzled with honey was just right! Exactly what I was looking for;  refreshing, healthy, yet the creamy-ness of the yogurt and the crunchy-ness of the muesli, just satisfied all my bad cravings of something greasy and bad. The scrambled eggs that I had on the side, on the other hand, needed more salt and for scrambled eggs it wasn't the most brilliant. (I've had better scrambled eggs - if that was even possible??!).

Bf's breakfast according to him was good, I had a bit and I must say the chirozos were a bit dry and hard, and I thought it lacked the flavour of a chirozo, if you know what I mean, in other plain words, it had no flavour whatsoever. Whether the rest of the plate was like that was hard to say. All I know is that, usually big breakfastas tend to look appetizing, thisone just didn't look all that nice. Truth be told I think my toasted muesli was a lot better!

I'm not sure what Milkd in Maylands was like in its prime, but at this point in time, it's pretty average, I would go back for the toasted muesli and possibly for the coffee, but I don't know if I would want anything else, because visually the big breakfast wasn't that great and the menu (whether it's lunch or breakfast) isn't extensive. Having said that though, if you just want to chill out, read a book/do some work with decent coffee around then Milkd in Maylands is probably a good location to do just that as it's very quite, just don't expect any warm ambience.

Two Ladies take to Tea on a Thursday mid-morning

OH how lovely are the grounds at Peninsula Tea Gardens in Maylands Pity the sun didn't come out to play all that much, which resulted in us having an indoors table.

This was taken when the rain decided to take a break and let the sun shine for a while

Although, we were very lucky to have the rain stop while we were having our breakfast/lunch/high tea.

It was fantastic. We used beautiful royal dalton cups and other silverwares...

All the lovely china and silverware to drink your tea

The beautiful tea cup

This is the cutest thing ever - the sugar holder!

Our Parisian Tea - 3 tiers of goodies for 2

had yummy smoke salmon, roast beef, cumcumber and ham sandwiches at the bottom tier
- all with fantastic mayo/dressing/sauce?

Scones with JAM and CREAM made up the second tier
- the cream was fresh, the jam was sweet as and the scones to die for. THE best scones ever.
BUTTERY and moist.

and of course indulged ourselves in petite cakes.

All downed with pots of tea. S opting for Kenliworth, and later a Latte, while I opted for Lovers Leap followed by the traditional English Breakfast.

It's so relaxing there, I love it. You get to escape the hussle and bussle of the city and yet be so close to it still. It's especially great on a Thursday mid-morning when it isn't so crowded, you have your own space. Allows you to chat, laugh over a nice cuppa tea.
What more does a lady want?

It's absolute perfection.
