Busy week

I have been meaning to share with all of you the wonderful dinner I had at Tom Randolph's new fine dining restaurant No. 4 Blake street, in North Perth. It was absolutely wonderful for him to have invited me and my boy. But alas, I have been swamped with family commitments since I had the dinner ONE and a HALF weeks ago and I am never behind with reviewing places I have been kindly invited too.

It's just with Chinese New Year and the lovely visit of my Uncle, Aunty and cousin from UK it has been a whirl-wind of late nights, along with the usual chaos of work!

In fact, I really should be sleeping instead of updating this on my phone. I have work tomorrow and it starts at 730am!!

So, I leave you with the Chinese New Year Massive dinner that is celebrated by my immediate family (no uncles, aunties, grandparents involved - that came on Tuesday and Wednesday that just went..).

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I hope to post tomorrow or Sunday! promise!

Like I said the immediate dinner celebrations for Chinese New Year was a banquet! Cooked by my Mum and Dad. It was lovely. The strawberry sorbet was the perfect cleanser after the massive meal. I love Weis.

Gong xi fa cai! (Happy Chinese New Year) and here's to the new hairstyle!

Today is Chinese New Year Eve and it is said that you celebrate by going back to your family homes and spend time with them and of course lots of food is involved.

Apart from eating, (which at the moment the feast is being prepared and I have helped my parents as much as I can with the preparation for our massive feast..(the post of the food will follow soon)) - Chinese people believe that you should cut your hair or trim it before you ring in the new year. This way you have gotten rid of what was bad before to welcome a happy and prosperous year.

A new look for a new year right?

I don't believe in the superstition, but coincidentally I ended up booking my hair appointment with Stephanie Chew owner and hair styler of S2C designs. Colour and trim and a fringe.

Stephanie prepping me for my colour

Colour done! and now sitting under "the egg" waiting for dye to set

She did a fab job I think and it didn't take as long as I thought it would! Yay! And as always reasonably priced at $120 for colour, cut and style for mid-length hair, not bad for Perth hey!?

She was rather busy today so there wasn't as much chatter although I did find out that she just got engaged! How exciting!

Anyway here's to new hairstyle and of course a Happy Year of the Snake!

Gong Xi Fa Cai!!

What do you think? Before the haircut on the left - waiting for her to finish with her previous client and the after on the right? I also ended up dying it a couple of shades lighter than my hair but keeping it as natural looking as possible.

The Apple Daily Bar and Eating House

I haven't had a chance to catch up with many of my friends since I've come back fromholidays so last night, I arranged an intimate dining and drinks with a few of my bestest girlies. We decided to try new, exciting and somewhere we can dress up to and have a good laugh with good drinks and good eats. We ended up at the Apple Daily. It doesn't take bookings so we had an early dinner at 6:30pm (worth going early because it gets packed pretty quickly!).

The Apple Daily is located on the second floor of the Print Hall building on St. George's Tce in the city. Having explored the Print Hall on numerous occasions, I've been looking for an excuse to eat at the Apple Daily. It's decked out in "hawkers" styling of Shanghai and the grand ole days of Chinese eateries, with wooden styled booths and bar stands and seats, except instead of being all wooden they provide you with comfy leather seats and fancy bar stools. Authentic enough I guess.

To start of the night we tried their fancy sounding cocktails - our three choices were amazingly yummy. Loved it. Definitely a place to try their entire list as well as their hidden cocktail menu (as "secretly" told by our waiter - who was very pleasant, accommodating, friendly and chatty).

The menu at the Apple Daily is very much catered to share - almost tapas styles, except that the size of the dishes is bigger, allowing people to have more than just a bite of the dish. We had a lot of trouble choosing because a lot of the dishes sounded very appetizing or at least interesting because we had no clue as to what it contained.

So...

After much deliberation and "hmmm.. umm... ahh.. oo.." we had the following dishes to share.

SL and I had freshly shuckled oysters (one of Print Hall's pride and joy) - oysters from Coffs Harbour may I add. It was accommpanied by a wedge of lime, lemon, a pot of vinegar and a pot of sweet chilli sauce. I placed a squirt of lime, a slight drizzle of vinegar and a fair amount of sweet chilli to my oyster and washed it down a little too quickly. It was delicious, it was fresh and I wanted more, but at $4/oyster, I had to be satisfied with one.

The oysters were followed by the Som Tum, which was a papaya salad - one of my favourites, especially when my grandma makes it! It's refreshing, zesty and with a dash of chilli sauce, it just one of the best summer salads around. However, the Som Tum at The Apple Daily gave us a shock. It was zesty and it was refreshing, until you get this massive HIT OF CHILLI. It was HOT. All three of us were coughing. Needless to say we did not finish it. It would have been so good, if only the chef could have controlled just a teensy bit of the chilli.

Our Som Tum chilli scare was made bit when the BBQ Beef salad came out. Although it had cut fresh chilli through it, it wasn't as hot and the beef was tender, juicy and the whole dish was refreshingly good. A nod to the thai cuisine.

An asian style night isn't complete without having fried rice - The Apple Daily fried rice had smoked trout through it and the rice grain they used was one with a bite, which I like (I don't really like really soft sticky rice, unless you are having sticky rice!). It had a smokey taste and smell through it, simple and yet delicious.

Then there was the soft shell crab. The crab was fairly meaty and we got 4 decent sized crabs on the plate and drizzled with the sweet, sour chilli sauce it was an enjoyable dish. Crispy, juicy and delicious crabs.

The last dish of the night was the grilled chicken with satay sauce. The chicken wasn't dry it was juicy but luckily there was the satay sauce otherwise I felt as though the chicken would be a little flavourless. Definitely needed more marinating time. But there was a fair portion of chicken on the plate.

Overall, the Apple Daily Bar and Eating House is an awesome place for a nice casual night out with a great drinks list and a menu that gives a nod to South East Asia, in particular flavours of Thai (from the dishes we had anyway) - lots of sour, zesty chilli flavours. They do have a disclaimer that there are lots of nuts in their dishes so those with allergies need to inform the waitstaff, but they should also have little chilli symbols to also indicate how hot and spicy their dishes are as well! Because I can assure you that, although I'm a lover of spice, a few of my friends would have struggled to find any dishes they could have eaten at the Apple Daily.

As for the service at the Apple Daily, our waiter, Pal(? spelling?) was funny, accommodating, friendly and was always concerned about what we thought of the food and if we were enjoying ourselves. This is a stark contrast to the Assistant Manager (whom I believe is called Annie/Anne) who was rude, took away our drinks menu that we were still looking at (didn't even ask if we still needed it..) but rather just snatched it off the side of SM's plate and she kept walking. Then she came and ask us if we were ready to order dessert straight after she dumped far too many desserts menu into my hand - and SL wasn't even at the table yet so how could we have been ready? To top it off when we paid the bill there was no politeness of "how was your meal?" but more running to another waitstaff and telling her what to do? All I can say is that they need to get another assistant manager, because really how can you get an assistant manager with no idea of service? If they can't provide and uphold service at a place how can the manager expect their staff to? Pity really because our waiter was awesome and that lady, assistant manager needs to learn a thing or to from her staff!

- So a part from that HUGE hiccup - I enjoyed the Apple Daily with its interesting menu, chilled vibe and amazing cocktails. I'll be back for more tastings of the food and drinks and will be perfectly content as long I never ever have to deal with that Anne/Annie assistant manager lady - so damn rude!

Han Palace

Han Palace is not the same as Hans Cafe, in fact it's the opposite of Hans Cafe. It's opposite in the sense that it's not bad asian food with bad service. The restaurant is hidden amongst other houses along Bennett street in East Perth, the only way to distinguish it the chinese style roofing and the chinese style entrance.

The restaurant is not your average Chinese restaurant, it is far from the cheap and cheerful Chinese restaurants that aspire to the same style of Chinese cooking, in fact, Han Palace is an upmarket eatery. The food is rich in flavours, an art form, the interior has  traditional and rather decadent decor and a atmosphere that is well refined for a Chinese restaurant.

The service of the place has improved dramatically, and the food is exceptionally good for Chinese food. In fact it's up there on the Chinese eatery. The best one I still reckon is Grand Palace on the esplanade. But that's another story.

We had a banquet dinner, 11 dishes or so in total, but I was too busy eating so forgot to take photos of some of them.

Sang Chow Bow - very generous portion -
a lot larger than most of the other restuarants
where they have a massive cabbage leaf and not enough filling

Scallops in their shell with vemicelli noodles
- nice and flavoursome

Crab

Chilli Prawns

Claypot filled with seafood and vegetables

Crispy chicken

Duck

Eagle's Nest

Fish - I can't remember what fish.

To finish off our dinner there was fresh fruit served - slices of rockmelon, watermelon, and oranges.
Overall, the dinner was very satisfying, everything was delicious and the service was fantastic. A new plate was given at each messy dish and of course there was also rice.

I think I will go there again for just a simple dinner. The food was just fantastic.

Hong Kong BBQ Northbridge...

This little restaurant used to look rather run-down, was rather dirty and typically unattractive with no real appeal in its physical appearance, but the BBQ duck, roast pork and BBQ pork from there was fantastic and their servings were rather generous, something that brings its customers back to their restaurant. But after a long and much needed renovation, the restaurant looks very nice and fancy. I was pleasantly surprised by the fresh, modern deco, but unfortunately, that's about where it stopped.

They say don't judge a book by its cover, and rightly so, although a huge improvement in the deco and the overall appearance of the place, I can't say that the quality of the food remained the way it was.

For the price we paid the dishes we got were unbelievably small - not enough for 7 people to taste the dish. The staff were only helpful to the customers who had wine and what not and forgot about what we asked for (and they weren't even busy) - the taste is average too.

BBQ trio - look how small the serving is..
BBQ Duck, Roast Pork, BBQ Pork

Jelly Fish

Sweet and Sour Pork

Chilli Prawns

Beef

Sizzling Tofu

I wouldn't go back. In face, I felt as though I wasted an evening even going there, bad choice on my part, should have gone next door to Dragon Palace and would have paid the same price/same bill but with better chinese food. ALSO granted the first two photos of this post are half eaten but the rest are the exact serving size they served to us and as you can see it's ridiculously small.

Be-lated celebrations..

When you haven't got enough time to meet up and it's especially hard to get everyone together, the best place to eat is a place that's nice, casual, and serves great food with minimal waiting for food time, and one that can be shared by all. Of course, that led us to Hawkers, to celebrate Manuela's be-lated birthday! Hawkers hasn't let us down and still hasn't!

Granted, because we were a party of 7, we ended up getting a table upstairs, it was a little small, but it  was ok - we still sat comfortably, just fitting all the plates of food was a problem. BUT boy was the food nice!! Part from being a place where it's for recovering drunkards, it has awesome dishes (you should try their sha cha duck and of course their famous marmite chicken!).

Like my previous post stated, do not be fooled by the dingy looking place, or the lack of english capabilities of some of the staff, this place still boost some of the best late night cruisines around and it always hits the spot! It's yummy, the service is quick, the meals come out quick, just getting a table may be hard. Expect to wait 15-30minutes (depending on the night).

But let me show you what you can expect..

Kai Lan - the vegetables are fresh but they cooked it in wayyy too much oil (like most chinese places in perth so completely ruined it)

Butter prawns - it's nice and yummy, but you can't really eat too much of it because they put too much sugar - next time i get this dish i'm asking them to remove the sugar component

ok.. like this is looking like a bad review.. but it does get better...
Mixed vegetables stir-fry - again like the kai lan - fresh, yummy but cooked in too much oil!

Marmite Chicken - YUMMIES -
i realise the camera shook and it's half eaten, but it's so good, i almost forgot the take the photo in the first place - i had to fight for my share!

Szechuan beef - OMG SO HOT! just the way it should be!! ^_^

Salt Pepper soft shell crab - YUMMMMM ^_^

Fuzhou Tofu - homemade tofu - it's soft, silky, milky texture - absolutely divine -
even tofu haters would love this!
VERY HAPPY DINERS!
