No. 44 King St. Cafe

o. 44 King st. Cafe is on one of Perth's prestigous streets, on the corner of a little laneway, overlooking boutiques like LV, Tiffany and Co, Bally and neighbouring Wheels and Dollbaby and Wasteland.

View from one of the open windows at No. 44 King Street Cafe

Rich wooden floors, rustic ceilings, wine cellars, solid tables and chairs provide a comfortable, and moody environments for diners to relax, chat and watch their meals/coffees being prepared in an open kitchen.

It's a super chic cafe, serving great coffee, a huge selection of teas and cakes, wines and of course food (which is seasonal). It's one of my favourite places to catch up with friends for a coffee or an after dinner chill-out place.

One of their ever rotating tarts - this one was a Mango Tart gobbled up by M

Their banana baked cheesecake - one of our favourites!

The fashionable location and great ambience (day and night!), combined with great coffee, food and an open bar make this place the perfect cafe to hang out.

my loves for summer

Summer is not one of my favourite seasons - it's too hot, too sticky and no matter what you do you just can't cool down. OH and of course you can't forget the insects that comes out to play - the flies and the mossies.

But having said all that - I do love going down to the beach on a nice sunny day (when it isn't too hot - so I like going in the afternoons) and it's especially great if there are no waves on the beach - as it happened to be (rather oddly) at Scarborough Beach on Saturday.

I love the fact that our sand is clean, white/yellow, the waters are crystal clear and the blue skies link the ocean's horizon that you don't even know where the sea meets the sky. On Saturday, although the skies were blue and the day was hot, there were a few fluffy clouds in the sky so where the sea and sky meet was pretty obvious.

Perth Upmarket - Original and Handcrafted

The Perth Upmarkets was established last year and occurs four times a year. It brings together brings together Perth's talented artists, designers, stylists, craftspeople and gourmets all under one roof. It has a diverse range of products - from handmande clothing, cupcakes, wall art, cards, homewares, jewellery and skin care products. For the last two years it was heard at the Perth town hall - but next year it's moving to UWA, Winthrop Hall. I had the opportunity (finally) to go there on the LAST upmarket of the year and I must say the variety of stalls there is quiet impressive.

and yes, I got something - a nice homemade clutch thats a good size for once - not too tiny - it can actually fit in everything I need - camera, phone, keys, lip-gloss, powder etc. and hey it's different and unique.

So the next perth upmarket is on the following days in 2010:

28th March 2010
27th June 2010
12th September 2010
28th November 2010

GO check it out! - you might find something totally unique.

Dieting whilst eating

After much deliberation and the fact that I'm starting to feel rather bloated, sluggish and the clothing that I bought two weeks ago seem to have shrink a little I've decided that I'm going to start being healthy again.

Don't get me wrong - that doesn't mean food photos will be over - far from it - seeing as I still have a done of enteries to catch up on over the last few months that I've been slack. Furthermore, I be home cooking - so watch out for uber awesome salads, desserts and simple simple meals. This should be rather interesting seeing as the most I can do is bake - I'm trying to resist having to live off lasanage and cakes (seeing as they probably the least healthy meals!!!).

So what are my goals - I realise it's close to Christmas, but it's uber easy this time around seeing as I'll be working and most of my friends have left Perth for greener or wetter pastures, such as New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and currently I'm destesting them all! *SULK* So alas - my aim is to lose 5kgs. Easily done.

Preparing myself mentally, seeing as tonight was the last night out for eating bad food - next time I go somewhere it'd be the vegetarian meal for me (or at least the lightest sort of meal) - Granted it will be hard seeing as the work Christmas function is at Hana BBQ. BUT that just means I shouldn't over-indulge! MUST CUT BACK ON MY SERVINGS.

1. Cut back on my servings - back to the normal small meals i used to eat
2. Exercise on tredmill - get my brother to teach me which settings he used to lose 8kg in 8 weeks (damn that boy!)
3. CUT DOWN ON chocolates/chips/ice-cream - especially at work!!
4. Pilates & dance

basically this is just for my general health. I never like dieting - this is to allow me to lose weight the healthy way to benefit my health so I don't get diabetes or heart disease.

WISH ME luck! and i will keep you all posted.  but first I have to get myself on that awful scales. *CLOSES EYES*

The Gala Restaurant

You know you are in good hands when one of the owners' Hans Lang, and a master chef (nothing like the tv series) hailing from Germany comes to your table to prepare the dessert - this restaurant does everything to perfection - except maybe the lack of views - but that's forgiven seeing as Perth's scenary is not crash hot.

Let me introduce you to a hidden gem that resides on the Southern end of the Narrows Bridge, in Applecross - The Gala Restaurant. Where I took one of my best girlfriends as a birthday celebration, along with two of my guy friends.

The entrance of the restaurant is a skip, hop and stroll along its drive-way where wall-climbing plants are planted nicely along the covers - reminding me of vineyards and cosy cottages - which is exactly where you end up - stepping into a romantic era styled housing interior - in a NICE wooden floor-ed charming restaurant - where classics meet modern times - where time slows down. The friendly waiter will take you to the set, smile, laugh and keep you amused, without invading your space or your company. Prestine service. Never had such service - We even tipped!

Lets get the exciting bits shall we? - We had a 3 course meal - where the four of us shared 2 entrees and 1 dessert and each of us with a main dish. We also had 2 side dishes and a complementary pre-entree bread (which may I add is no ordinary bread - it's pastry goodness!).

please be aware most of the photos do not have a flash on - because when you are in a fine dining area it's just plane rude to have flash on!

The menu was HUGE and very nicely presented - at the time we were there they were having an asparagus special/week and the last time I checked their website they were still having it (which was checked about 2 weeks ago) - should try it out!

Pre-entree bread - it's cheesy warm and the better it came with had some spices in it too!

Entree # 1 - Salmon Carpaccio in Truffle Ponzu Dressing

truffle marshmallow and ponzu caviar
aka salmon with mashmallow truffle (yes, you guessed it the white fluffy things are the mashmallow truffles!)

The entree would have been brilliant if the salmon wasn't so drenched in soy sauce - I think the chief accidently split too much soy.

Entree # 2 - Tiger Prawns and Pork Belly with Granny Smith Apple Cloud - tiger prawns filled with shredded honey glazed pork belly, spicy plum sauce - one of their signature dishes

Absolutely heavenly!

Photobucket

The Side dishes - - steamned vegetables and Potato Gratin prepared with Tasmanian Royal Blue Potatoes - potatoe cheesy goodness ^_^

The potatoe was so yummy. Creamy, cheesy in just the right amounts.
and the vegetables made you feel slightly healthy for a change - somewhat.

Oven baked Barramundi a la Café de Paris
with king oyster mushrooms and smoked potato puree

According to M the fish was delictable!

Trio of Duck - pan-fried duck breast with orange salt - brioche filled duck neck in duck jus
and drumstick glazed with cumquat jam

I had a taste of one of the trio and I must say it is juicy sculent and perfect - When I come back and this dish is on the menu I'll be ordering it along with the Tiger prawns entree.

White Asparagus and Veal Medallion
shallot sauce, iced roquefort brule and quince jelly

S loved the dish - and I loved the asparagus - it was crunchy and NOT stringy.

Venison Loin Medallion with blueberry sauce

The blueberry sauce made the dish interesting in a good way - slightly sweet and yet a hint of blueberry-ness and the venison was cooked to perfection.

And the dessert - their signature crepes, especially prepared by the masterchef and one-half owner of Gala restaurant - Han Lang

Crepes with ice-cream, strawberrys and cramalised toffee cage!

There was two of the crepes - for us to share. PURE HAVEN! and it was fun watching him make it - he went through all the steps and why each step must be done and how it brings out the flavour. it's pure goodness.

Will I be coming back -- YES! when? I don't know, someone take me!! ^_^

life is far too important to take things seriously - wilde

I feel as though I'm 30-years old.
I don't feel as though I'm 22. TEN TEN TWO. SO OLD.
I rarely like anything that a 'normal' 22 year old likes.
I'm not a big fan of binge drinking, the most alcohol I'll have is maybe 3-4 cocktails. I hate beer with a passion, unless it was cherry flavoured. I prefer fruity wines and anything with sparkling or bubbles are nice. I hate CHEAP crappy champagne, because it tastes disgusting and tastes like (or at least I'm imagining it will taste like) drinking 96% pure Ethanol you have in the laboratories.
I HATE going to Northbridge late Saturday night. Actually I hate all the clubs in northbridge, I just feel disgusting and dirty - like I need to be hosed down in some locked down facility to get all the yuck off me.
I rather be somewhere like a cafe or a bar. Take me to Brisbane, Luxe, Minq, Belguim Beer, No. 44, Exomod, Soto and I'll be fine. In fact you could even take me up to Heathcotte, Point Water etc. than take clubbing -  don't get me wrong, I like to have my hair down and dance the night away or sing at the top of my lungs.
BUT I rather have a decent conversation than be so drunk that I can't remember anything.
I like to eat proper food MACCAS is not counted as proper food, that's just disgusting. I like to try new restaurants. I enjoy all cusines.
I adore shopping. I like to dress up, even if it's a simple lunch out to yum cha, I believe you can still dress-ed up and look damn hot and sexy in a pair of jeans and top.
I hate make-up. The most I'll put on is a lipstick and my dior powder. I strongly believe in moisturising and using serums.
I detest smokers who smoke in front of me. If you want to kill yourself fine, but don't murder me!
I call my family friends who are under 20 "kids".
I have savings. I'm comtemplating whether I want my savings to go towards a future house deposit or towards my holiday adventures.
I go out a lot like a 22 year olds but I can't last past 12.
But i guess the good thing is that I'm as whimsical and dreamy just like any other 22 year old.

Steam Boating 101

Some of you may have never had steam boat before and I realise that we are fast approaching summer (although the weather may not seem like it at present -- and steam boat (hot pot) is not the best in summer.. because for obvious reason - it's hot!) but I feel as though everyone should prepare themselves so next winter you can all visit places like Dragon Seafood Restaurant on James st. Northbridge or Korean Cafe Restaurant on Francis st. Northbridge or Nanikijup in Victoria Park for their Steam Boats.

SOOOOO let me welcome you to.....

STEAM BOATING 101
1. Here is the stove. The waiter is asking us what soup kind of soup we would like to cook our food in. (There's about a choice of like 5/6 but my favourite is satay or the chicken original!.. you can split the soup in two.. most of the time depending on the restaurant that you go to!)

2. In the middle/corner of the restaurant there is an  all you can eat/cook/take table which has LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of seafood, dumplings, fish balls, wontons, vegies etc. Just make sure you cook and eat everything that you take! (they charge extra for any uneaten things!) - IF this place is ALL YOU CAN EAT if it is a set hot pot - then they will bring what you ordered to your table.

3. COOK YOUR FOOD BY PUTTING IT IN THE BOILING SOUP! =D

4. How do you know that it's Cooked? Look for colour changes. Dumplings and wontons when done floats to the top. And if you not sure take it to your bowl. inspect. if not done throw it back in!

5. EAT! =D

NOTES:

a. PLEASE grab the metal spoon scooping thingo thats to help you grab your cooked meal! and DO NOT steal other peoples spoon scooping thing! it's rather annoying! >_<":
b. try to separate your cooking chopsticks with your eating chopsticks, unless of course you want to eat the raw juices with your cooked juices.. i know i don't!! and stack of your used dishes so the waiters and collect it up and makes your table all neat and tidy!

This ends the Steam Boating 101 class

Now go and eat and have fun doing it! ^_^

ode to good company, coffees and cafes

If it wasn't for my cafe catch ups and gossips -  life would be so dull. Of course things are always better if the cup is heavenly..

alas..

'Close, engaging company can make even the most mediocre coffee taste like heaven in a cup.'
