City to Surf Perth

waiting around for the race to start as the marathoners were taking their sweet time getting around the course - which pretty much delayed EVERYONE!

The annual City to Surf event and this year I attempted to run the 12km (managed to run half) which is huge thing for me because I didn't train and I hate running.

To top it off thanks to cousin had awesome post run foods at the Shell tent.

Got over the finish line and was flushed!

Stuffing our faces outside the shell tent and yes that is bacon egg in a muffin.

I'll let you know the time when I find out but it's about 100mins according to my watch.

Ps. Also saw a family of duckies! while passing through Perry Lakes reserve and couldn't resist and took a photo!

Eating healthy with AntiOx Chocolate and Snack Bars and GIVEAWAY!

One of my biggest vices in the quest to become toned and fit is.. well can you guess?.. my love of food. I think this blog says it all. It's a miracle that I don't weight a ton.

When I'm not out dining my diet is generally good, except for this minor (ok fine it's a major problem) thing.. it's snacking. I snack on too much junk. The biggest vices being chocolate and chips.

Good thing for me that I discovered Australian made AntiOx Snack Bars and Chocolate (and just in the nick of time too, because I have been coming home this past 3 weeks eating my little heart out on cadbury chocolate blocks of milk chocolate and crunchies and feeling rather sluggish!). They are high in natural antioxidants, low in sugar and calories. Winning so far!

The chocolate bars are made with rich 70% cocoa dark chocolate (which you can really taste) and super fruits goji or acai. I really couldn't believe the low sugar content and the low calories. I could eat the whole packet and still wouldn't be as bad as eating one piece of Lindt or blocks of cadbury chocolate. Just see for yourself in this photo.

Ok, so you are probably wondering, something that healthy can't possibly taste good. But trust me they are! Surprisingly. I couldn't believe that they punch a fair bit of dark chocolate, that slightly bitter dark chocolate bitter goodness taste. The goji berries flavour is better than acai one. The goji berries have this slight chewy texture and reminded me very much of the "fruits of forrest" cadbury minus the sugar content and AntiOx Goji is dark chocolate deliciousness. I was in chocolate haven. Now I can snack and not feel guilty. And to top it off, just four blocks or even less fills you up and satisfies you so much more than any other chocolate.
WINNING.

Enjoying my block of dark chocolate and looking rather worn out from the cold and stresses

Then there are the AntiOx Snack Bars that come in three flavours (made of super foods!) - goji, acai and chia and quinoa. The snack bars are made of 70% cocoa dark chocolate coated around super fruits (goji, acai or chia and quinoa, depending on the flavour), forrest berries and wholegrains. I have been having them after work but before gymming, that in between time where you are so famished and wanting to consume everything. The snack bars were great to satisfy that craving.

The insides of the Goji snack bar

The snack bars a little higher in calories, but are still better than most snack bars on the super market shelves and they actually surprisingly taste good, even without the added sugar, just natural sugar. Again, the goji flavour came out best in terms of taste. Have a look at the calorie content.

The AntiOx chocolate and snack bars range is the way to go in terms of not giving up on the chocolate love, and keeping your waistline in check. It's an option to substitute your bad cravings, whist giving you all this antioxidant boosts. In fact for further nutritional information on the AntiOx products check out this page.

But HEY don't let me tell you about it, you should try it out yourself and let me know what you think and if you agree with me.

Better yet, I have 2 AntiOx prize packs to giveaway.
Each prize pack contains:
6 x AntiOx Snack Bars
4 x AntiOx Chocolates

All you have to do to get the prize packs is answer this very simple question in my comment section of this post...

smashed through the storm!

YAY! for my self will!

After all the over eating of last week -

1 dinner party with friends at Jamie's Italian (second visit.. and yes I realise I have yet to blog about it. It is currently in DRAFT mode)

2 birthday dinners

So 1 hour of pumping it out at the gym followed by body balance class to stretch everything out and gym time number 2 for this week!

It's so nice to be indoors making your fat cry while outside the clouds are little massive tears out!

ps. did I mention I love storms and rain?
autumn and winter is amazing in every aspect.

Gym in winter..

Finally winter is in Perth! I couldn't be happier!

The storm front is in making me re think driving to the gym this afternoon - major self debating happening.

But then Lorna Jane gave me a little Wednesday work out motivation.

Perhaps doing it at home may be ok for today.. Now to find the motivation to not procrastinate!

Sick as a puppy...

I've been sick since Tuesday and I thought I was getting better but I've been coughing up my lungs and I'm all congested.

So not only have I missed work but missed an all important date with the girls - a triple date and it was to see Danny Bhoy with epic close seats. Sigh.

But my god vicks vaporub is my friend! That and paracetamol.

PB and J

The naughtiest thing to put on a toast (especially on wholemeal bread..) but also one of the most satisfying is peanut butter and jam (from the Berry Farm).

It's just like the good ole days. Except now I feel bad for my waistline.. Even if I did go for interval training for 20mins and went to a bodypump class.

A moment on your lips but a few inches on your hips and waist.. Worth it?

Hell yeh! I like to think it's better than grabbing cake!

Weight loss

Ok, so I'm not complaining that I lost weight. In fact I'm so glad that all my hard yard at the gym and every few months my ability to watch what I eat (for at least a couple months) has meant that in the last 2 years I have lost 10cm of my waist and close to 10kg of weight. Slow and steady. This isn't bad considering the fact that I did it the healthy way and as you all know by now I love to eat, and you can tell that hasn't stopped. No fad diets - just portion control, calorie counting and healthy choices (which I am still yet to fully control, because you see I love to snack and have a weakness for hot chips and chocolate!).

Anyway, the upside of losing weight is that I'm healthier, fitter, and probably looking the best I have been in ages. Very much happy. Also I love to exercise now and if I don't I feel a little BLAH.

The downsize is that I

can't fit into half my clothes. The other half I can because they were previously a little on the tight size or they were clothes for when I was smaller. This is a real fiancial burden! My work shirts are huge they don't sit the way they ought to at all, but I really don't have the money to overhurgh my whole wardrobe. Partly because I don't want to throw out all my clothes nor do I want to keep it all.

Usually I would give it to Saint Vinnies, but because I'm a little strapped for cash, thanks to having a mortgage and I really want to go to USA/Canada at the end of the year, so I'm dipping back into eBay. But I'm going to start of with just one item to test the waters.

So I decided to sell and part with a dress I don't wear so much anymore - there is nothing wrong with it, and it's not really outdated either! It's just a waste of a perfectly pretty dress to be hiding at the back of my wardrobe. It's a Wayne By Wayne Cooper strapless dress.

If you like check out the eBay listing here. If this is sold I will be posting more of my preloved and very well looked after clothing. I mean come on, a barely worn (I swear I have only worn it about 3 times!) Wayne Cooper dress for $9.99 it's a bloody bargain!

Anyway, wish me luck! Otherwise it's off to the swapmeets I go! Downside to swapmeets is waking up at an ungodly hour to get a place to start up!

Dessert Celebrations

Finally the time has come after slightly over a year of hard work.. The hard earned annual leave.

Seeing as you suppose to bring cake for your birthday to share at work I bought mine early as I won't be there on my day.

So I got a raspberry cheesecake from Chez Jean Claude in Subiaco - the consistency was more of a mousse. Rather light not too rich, but the berry flavours and pieces of beries was throughout the cake. The cake was enclosed in marble dark chocolate slates. Yummy light cheesecake.

I also got a lemon & lime brûlée tart from Lawleys bakery in Shenton Park. The pastry was a little undercooked but the lime and lemon flavour is perfectly balanced with sweetness. I'm always such a fan of good slightly tangy desserts.

Unfortunately I only got the chance to take a photo of the two after it was cut and eaten into.

Then for the family I got a bunch of the famous Chez Jean Claude in Subiaco almond croissant - beautiful, soft, flaky, almonds cream goodness.

Now I'm feeling guilty and fat and will be hitting the gym before massive feasts that is to occur over the weekend.

Frenchie times

I can't believe it'd be the end of October tomorrow! Time flies way too fast!

I'm rather excited as November is my birthday month and finding time to celebrate my birthday with my family and friends is proven to be a monumentous task! So I be having several different dinners at places I've been wanting to try but haven't got the opportunity. It also means I'll be very poor..!!

So to start off I am going to my favorite French bistro - P'tite Ardoise in highgate with my closest of friends I've known for over 10 years. The staff at P'tite Ardoise have been so wonderful so far as to accommodate a large group at their small dining room and offering me set menus (which is adaptable).

Then bf is spoiling me with a lovely dinner at the Loose Box. I hope it'd be fantastic because I wasn't impressed with Les Bistro Des Artistes (a post that should be written up very soon).

Then a lovely intimate family dinner with bf and my parents, brothers and their gfs at Bistro Gulliaume. Should be pretty good! A

Noticing a pattern there? All French restaurants!

There goes my savings! Anyone willing to sponsor my meal?? Hahaa kidding...

Then I also have a couple of Hens Party and a wedding!!

Oh did I mention tomorrow I get to dine at the Print Hall dining with a couple of beautiful ladies C & E! So excited.. We'll catch up and it'd be like a bday celebration for all three of us!

So much for losing weight. I've been fairly good most of the time - going to the gym 3x a week but diet wise... If there wasn't so many places I want to try/if the foodie in me would stop and control herself I would be fine... just have to make sure I control myself when I go out and eat... I have a Herve Leger I need to make sure I still fit freaking nicely in! So far I'm just a little blotted.. But there is a quick and effective cure for that... The Dukan Diet. So good!!

Which I will restart again now!

"For someone that eats out so much and loves her food so much you look bloody amazing!"

A friend of mine made a comment the other week about my eating habits. These were her exact words..

"For someone that eats out so much and loves her food so much you look bloody amazing!"

HAHA and although it's almost like an insult I take it as a compliment. Because firstly I don't have a fast metabolism. Far from it. My body loves to keep me insulated! XD~~

And YES I could be TEN TIMES THE SIZE I actually am! And YES my parents have told me to stop going out so much and I truly try to!

For instance, I'm actually very much sick of eating out at the moment, and yet I have a list of restaurants I want to try and dine at. So I'm going to detox for a while (I managed to for about 5 days and then went all down hill with haven't not seen several friends in a long while!) Detoxing doesn't help when eating is socialising.

Anyway, I watch what I eat, and when I'm actually on my diet - strict diet that is - I watch what I eat when I go out. Otherwise anything is fair game. I don't deprieve myself of what I love. But I restrict and choose my meals carefully when I feel like I'm starting to lose shape. It also helps that I'm addicted to sweating off at the gym. I try to go at least three to four times a week. On a bad week it'd be twice a week, in which case I become very lethargic and BLAH and will have to work harder the next week.

So for her words, I'm grateful, because it shows that I haven't gained any weight despite my eating, in fact when I don't dine out I TRY to be a clean eater. And I work bloody hard to burn everything I eat off!
In fact, if anything I'm a lot toner and healthier now than I have been for ages, after all calories in should always be less than calories out! ^_^

Blissful RDO (Rostered Day Off)

Nothing beats a random weekday off from work for my RDO!

So what's better than spending it at a spa!

I went to the relatively new Endota spa opposite His Majesty's Theatre near Empire Games on Hay street in The city.

Climb the stairs and you are already starting to relax as soothing music fills the air and the rush of the city is left behind.

I had a lovely lady Laura look after mre. Shr firstly waxed my legs and shaped my eyebrows before leading me into dimmed room with soothing music. I had a foot massage and scrub before a beautiful one hour full body massage. Followed by a 30 minute calming facial. I swear I fell asleep at some point.

It was just blissful and I didn't want to go back to reality.

If only I was a lady of leisure wouldn't mind getting it done more often.

consequences of my love of food

Story of my life.

I was really good in the past week, exercising three times a week. Doing double classes. Starting to feel like my fit self before laziness took over earlier this year.

Then...

Weekend happened...

Had pizza delivered to work on Friday night. Bf went and bought me ice cream at the movies. Had brunch on Saturday morning. Cousin delivered Grill'd to work for dinner on Saturday night. Had mum's homemade yummy noodles when I got home. (DOUBLE DINNER EPIC FAIL!) Then today... ate too much ice-cream for dessert at O's dinner party. T_T

There goes all the exercise...

SIGH..

here comes another week of committing to exercise!

Help someone QUIT.

I'm a big advocate of getting people to quit smoking. I don't think people realise what they put into themselves and the consequences of them smoking. I've heard smokers all say, "It's not affecting you, so why do you care?" etc. etc. etc."Tobacco use reduces not only your life expectancy but your quality of life. Many medical conditions caused by smoking can result not just in death, but in living for years with disabling health problems" (so this is also where you are affecting others!) I can tell you one thing passive smoking is just as bad, if not worse than smoking themselves. Especially smoking around children or preganant ladies (or they themselves smoking). There is substantial evidence that second-hand smoke is a serious health threat. Studies suggest that even brief exposure to second-hand smoke can be harmful and that regular exposure increases the risk of respiratory problems, heart disease, heart attacks, and cancer. Research into smoking in the home indicates that non-smokers who live with a smoker have a 25%-30% greater risk of developing coronary heart disease than those who live in a smoke-free environment. A developing baby can be affected by ETS if the mother smokes or if she is exposed to tobacco smoke during pregnancy. Exposure to second-hand smoke during pregnancy can reduce the growth and health of babies and increase the risks of a number of complications and illness for both mother and baby. Babies born to women who smoke during pregnancy have a greater chance of premature birth, low birth weight, stillbirth and infant mortality. Smoking during pregnancy can also affect the development of baby’s lungs which increases the risk for many health problems.

Smokers don't think the health issues and problems related with smoking is not an immediate effect and the risk of cancers and health issues is just a chance. I don't think they realise that it's not a gamble as to whether or not they will experience it, chances are they have it but don't realise it.

So firstly, what are the issues? Apart from the physical appearances - looking older, yellow nails and teeth, bad breathe, your clothes smelling (what's the point of buying beautiful clothes if you are just going to stain them with ciggarette smell and ash?) etc.

There are the unseen things. Your lungs for example are made up for small air pockets, every ciggarette smoked burns these little pockets up so the ability to exchange gases is more difficult, which means that it becomes harder for you to breathe. You get asthma like attacks, you cough more and eventually these pockets will be destroyed as the lungs cannot repair this damage, this is called emphysema. The main symptom of emphysema is a feeling of breathlessness that gradually becomes more severe over the years. Sufferers often say they feel like they're suffocating. Almost all smokers will get emphysema. The damage to the lungs occurs for many years before the effects are felt.

Inhaling the substances in any type of burning tobacco is harmful to the human body. The toxins in tobacco smoke can go everywhere in the body that the blood flows causing harm to nearly every organ and system of the body. Your throat gets burnt from dragging the chemicals down your throat this can eventually lead to throat cancer. There is risk of stomach cancers, prostate cancers and colon cancers. Smoking can also cause blindness, dental problems, erectile dysfunction, reduced fertility in women, sudden infant death syndrome, contributes to osteoporosis and increases the risks of pregnancy complications including premature birth, low birth weight, still birth and infant mortality

If this wasn't enough there is the money factor, you are spending more money on something that is shortening your lifespan than on other things that can enrich your life and your family lives. The amount of money you can save by not buying a ciggarette can probably take you and your family on a holiday. You might be able to get that new boat you wanted, or that car. AND if you think quitting is going to cost more or just as much as buying ciggarettes - essentially you are just replacing the cost of the packet of ciggarettes (sometimes the quit options are cheaper!) with something that is a short term cost but very long term gain.

After all if you are gone, it'd be the people you left behind that will be affected by it.
 Think about it, and quit.

HELPING YOU TO LIGHT OUT and QUIT:

Some benefits of quitting

You will feel the benefits of quitting straight away as your body repairs itself. Depending on the number of cigarettes you smoke, typical benefits of stopping are:
  • After twelve hours almost all of the nicotine is out of your system.
  • After twenty-four hours the level of carbon monoxide in your blood has dropped dramatically. You now have more oxygen in your bloodstream.
  • After five days most nicotine by-products have gone.
  • Within days your sense of taste and smell improves.
  • Within a month your blood pressure returns to its normal level and your immune system begins to show signs of recovery.
  • Within two months your lungs will no longer be producing extra phlegm caused by smoking.
  • After twelve months your increased risk of dying from heart disease is half that of a continuing smoker.
  • Stopping smoking reduces the incidence and progression of lung disease including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
  • After ten years of stopping your risk of lung cancer is less than half that of a continuing smoker and continues to decline (provided the disease is not already present).
  • After fifteen years your risk of heart attack and stroke is almost the same as that of a person who has never smoked.

Told to save..

So my lovely father just informed me that I have save $x__,___ of dollars (that gap btw is a comma not a decimal place) until 2012 so I can afford my lovely apartment by then.

Which means the following cuts:

As of tonight:

** NO coffees from cafes - sorry sweeties if you want me at a cafe I'll come for the goss and to see you lovelies, but I must stay away from buying any.. (Only occasional allowances)  $4.50 x 300 = $1350 (65 days for any off days).

** MUST not have cakes/churros/sweets at cafe shops $6.50 x 52 = $338 (again approximate, i'm sure I don't go and have cake/churros/sweets at cafe 52 times a year, definately less than that, but that's just for any odd circumstances).

** MUST find cheaper means of parking at work, most likely taking the bus - MUST get smart rider to save even more $10.40 x 260 = $2704 vs. $1.33 x 2 (return journey) x 260 = $691.60 therefore, saving $2012.40 (and that's not even including the cost of petrol, this is just the cost of parking).

** MUST not be tempted to buy chocolate/ice-cream/eat at work/go out to eat for lunch at work $10 x 260 = $2600

** MUST not by magazines $8 x 52 = $416

TOTAL SAVINGS (from only cutting down these unneccessary expenses) = $7408

WOW!!

Eventually I must cut down on the amount of shopping trips I do and the amount of fine dining that I do (which is probably the hardest thing ever). Nevertheless, the above already shows how much it costs. It's ridiculous. If I can cut down on this it'd be terrific, because I would have saved a lot, plus I won't get fat, because I'm cutting the junk.

I figured I allow my self at least once a month of fine dining, and once every fortnight of eating out. I mean if I actually calculator the amount of money I spend eating out I'm sure it'd be in THOUSANDS. Scary thought. So I will try, however, tonight I have a S's 23rd Birthday and it's a degustation at Jackson's restaurant. A premium restaurant. So how can I say no to that? Plus, it's a birthday.

But after today I get my gymming back on track (the last two weeks have been bad, I've only been going once a week instead of at least twice a week, plus I've been pigging out. Starting this new job has totally impacted on my waist line and my gucci wallet line) and I WILL SAVE LOTS.

City to Surf 2010

City to Surf is an annual Perth tradition held at the last Sunday of August, from the Esplanade in the city to the surf in City Beach. This year I decided to participate so A, A's aunt, H and I registered for the city to surf 12km walk/run.

It was a beautiful, sunny, warm Perth day, perfect weather to walk/run to the beach. More than 40 000 participants also agreed.

There were so many people, you couldn't even see the start or the end of the stream of people running/jogging/walking. In fact, I was some what surprised by the amount of people, you don't usually get to see that many! Luckily the marathon and half marathon people have their own lane otherwise how annoying would it be to dodge people.

A's aunty at the 10km mark! yay 2km more!

You just have to love the community spirit, everybody participating, from the young to the old, to the volunteers handing out the water along the way, to the porterloos set ups, the music at some points, this teenager singing to everyone and the cheersquads along the way. It was just a lot of fun and I think next year I might actually run/walk properly, as in more running, less walking. Which means time to start training, especially to get over those hills, who would have thought Perth is so damn hilly??!! We may not have mountains but we have a lot of damn hills.

Crossing the finish line after 12km of walking..The time above is not accurate, but my chip attached to my shoe laces states that I finished the race 2h 6mins and 25 secs!

see not even a sweat! leisure walk.. next year we do the run..

The circle of unhealthy food..
Oh, the funniest thing (and the most ironic), is that at the end, they have a massive set up of food - where there was a sausage sizzle, red rooster and other fast food joints, and I'm thinking, after all that hard work and exercise you just spent the morning doing, it's being negated and proven to be counter productive by stuffing yourself with the food that is available there. They really need to have healthier options.

Overall, I be doing it again and it's just too much fun, especially if you get a group together.

busy busy

I've had a full on week last week and a better weekend.

Friday was bf and mine 3rd month.. naaww how cute yeh?.. anyway, he took me to Fraser's Restaurant, and much to my surprise it was actually really fantastic (except maybe the service - it wasn't exactly spectacular, but at least the wine girls really knew how to match their reds to the lamb). Yes, I had lamb, it was so tender and probably the best lamb I've had so far at a restaurant, bf had a scotch fillet steak. No photos, because I forgot to charge my camera - I was really busy that day. The dessert was also very nice.. the roasted almonds (and other things) bread pudding with ice cream, melted chocolate and cream was the perfect treat to end the dinner (and warm your tummy seeing as it was freezing outside), while bf had the missussiipi (no idea how to spell it, too many s's and too many i's) mud cake with ice cream and cream. I was surprise that it was great, only because I've had so many bad things about it. I guess the only complaint I have is that the price was really steep. But overall, with the views of the city through the trees and the food, and the romantic ambience about the whole place (lots of couples), it was fantastic.

I have also just started a new job, and that has been rather interesting. I see how long I can stick around. The pay is great. The hours are great. The work isn't too stressful, just a lot of pressure timewise with meeting deadlines and what-nots. I also get a proper lunch break and morning tea and afternoon tea if I so wish it. As well as having public holidays off (and paid for!) YES!!

I also went to see SALT yesterday after work, took a quick shower, ate and drove to bf's place, where he was still cooking dinner for him and his housemates, then I had his famous cheesecake and O.M.G it truly is the best cheesecake ever!!! BETTER than any of the ones in the shops, better than any I've ever tasted. I LOVE IT. So I requested that he makes it for my birthday (he doesn't make it too often because it's not exactly the healthiest thing, in fact its completely and utterly, deliciously sinful and unhealthy, which explains why it's so damn good!), now I can't wait until my birthday.

I've also been keeping up with my gym work - mum (who is brutly honest when it comes to my weight and size) said that I've toned up and slimmed down, even though it doesn't exactly show up on the scales, bf also commented, so I must be doing something right. I been trying to exercise three times a week at least, and limit eating out to once a week, and in terms of skipping junk, I'm still so hopeless and helpless in that department (just look at the notes in this entry!!). I been doing yoga, bodypump and occasional running, but now I've descovered the perfect cardio that I enjoy (apart from spin class) is BODYCOMBAT. Apart from working up a sweat, it's the perfect stress reliefer on a Wednesday night.

Oh man, it's 11:25pm, I have to read this work manual and sleep, hmm.. I still have a procrastination habit.
Fantastic.

oh life..

Working.

Attended an interview for a very interesting aspect of the my profession. Something completely different. Not quite community (no retail aspects of it) not quite hospital (don't really get to do clinical reviews unless I get accreditated - but I do deal with the doctors, nurses, carers etc). They kept telling me that my experiences is what they were after and were rather impressed with my resume. Alas they still had more interviews. I will know the news by the end of the week.

Body pump.

Yoga.

Running.

Not necessarily in that order. I was suppose to go to my body pump class but worked called me. DAMN on-call.

Eating all you can eat Greek food tonight. Should be interesting, because firstly I had a bad experience at this Greek place I went to and secondly it's all-you-can-eat, which generally ends up being not the best of foods. But I'm willing to try new things.

Speaking of new things. I found the perfect pair of shorts for spring/summer and have been assembling outfits for the warmer weather. This autumn/winter fashion didn't do it for me but the spring/summer assembles are rather inspirational. Also partly because I have two moods to me, I have this urban/street/thrown together style of me, which is perfect with all the nudes, the military trends thats coming through and I also have this girlie/pretty/ prairie pretty/elegant/vintage style, which is why I love the hints of floral, lace, and vintage accessories/styles that are out there. I can't wait until I get to let lose my conflicting styles. It really just depends on my mood as to which one I would wear.

I just wish though I would lose weight. I seem to be more flexible and definately my strength improved but I still haven't managed to lose the weight. MUST STOP EATING ICE CREAM. *SIGH*
